Rose Geoff Hamilton

31 commentsWe actually visited this in September and thought I would save this blog for a rainy day. Today is a really dull dark day and I know a lot of you are experiencing awful weather at the moment so hopefully this will cheer you up a bit. We have been here a few times but never in September and was slightly disappointed as they do not seem to have enough staff to keep it all in tip top condition, so you will see that some of the pictures of the little gardens are not as good as they usually are. For those of you that have never been, it is worth going, but in the summer. There is a lovely cafe there for lunches and home made cakes. I can definitely recommend that, especially the cakes!
Lol.This is the fruit tree walk. I can remember when Geoff first started planting this walkway in Gardeners World all those years ago.Now one of the mistakes I made was not to note the names of each little garden. I think this may have been the “Gentleman’s Garden” and I can remember seeing Geoff sitting in his deck chair. We will carry on to the next little garden. As you can see, this is the ' Artisan’s Garden'I bet you can all remember him building all of these! It only seems like yesterday! This was slightly neglected and can’t remember which garden it was in, but I do remember him making it and filling it with low growing herbs. I think he got the idea after visiting an old lady’s cottage garden in the programme “Paradise Gardens” where he was sat at a table having a snack with her and a robin flew onto the table and pinched a bit of their cheese! And here he is! Our dear old Geoff sadly missed and still the best!!can’t remember the name of this garden, so we’ll carry on to the nextThese next gardens were designed and done by Geoff’s son and wife who took over after he died. This is the knot garden.!is “The children’s Garden”The next part we will go to is the woodland area which also includes a bog garden.I can remember Geoff building thisHow big!!We are now leaving the woodland area and will go this way through the pergola to the big kitchen garden which Geoff did, but is looking a bit sad at the moment!Thats my lovely daughter in law there! The kitchen garden is on the left and the mediteranian garden on the right.
Geoff Hamilton, journalist, broadcaster and gardener: born London 12 August 1936; twice married (three sons); died near Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan 4 August 1996. A beautifully rounded and bushy shrub, ‘Geoff Hamilton’ is a strong-growing, healthy and exceptionally disease resistant. Its foliage is similar to that of a Hybrid Tea rose. It is an excellent choice for the back of the border, where it will compete well with other plants. Named in memory of an old friend, who was a much-loved television.
Just past here is the little orchard. We are on our way back now and I hope you have all enjoyed your day out! I will leave you with this one picture.
Thankyou for joining me!. 26 Nov, 2012. 20 likes. I am the same Pamg.
I used to like G.W. With Alan but I went off it when Toby took over!
I quite like Monty but not the programme as much as I used to.I thought you were in Lincolnshire, Sue! Aren't you lucky living so near! Yes, I was told that they rely on volunteers. If I lived nearer i would have loved to help them out!
I bought quite a few plants home as well. How could I not! Hahaa! Thanks Grandmage.
I just don't think its been the same without him. He was a hard act to follow! Thanks Scotkat.
Friday night has never been the same since then! Even my hubby watched it!
I am in Lincs Rose and proud of it, where the four counties meet, Rutland is left at the bottom of my road and walk up a slight hill, if I enter the town go over the town bridge and turn left, even before leaving the actual town one is in Cambs, turn right instead and I`m in Northants, over the years we`ve had a few issues here, especially before they decided to move the boundary closer to the AI.A lady after my own heart, its so wrong to visit a place like that and not buy a keepsake. Thanks Terra, you must go and visit it. You won't regret it!You too, Bloomer! Once you've been, you will want to go again!
I'm glad you enjoyed the blog.I had to get the map book out Sue and have a look where these 4 points were. I never realised that Lincolshire was so close to Rutland. We have been to Rutland Water before which is lovely in the summer, but not to Oakham castle.
We'll have to go there next time! It wasn't just one keepsake Sue! League of legends damage hack.

Lol.Thanks Karen. His son's voice is so much like Geoffs. Its uncanny! Thanks Stickie for your comments. I'm pleased you enjoyed it.Thanks Hywel. I don't think another gardener could match him, although Alan came pretty close, but he doesn't do many gardening programmes now. My hubby is buying me his latest book ' My secret Garden' for Christmas. Yes, he was an identical twin, Pamg.
I have the book which is called ' A man and his garden' and in it are many family pictures including one when he was a school boy and it is hard to decide which one is which! Apparently the teachers even got mixed up as well! I can recommend this book for any of you who was a fan of his. Thanks Xela.
This time of year when there isn't much to do outside, cheers us up, I think! Thanks Julia. I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
I would imagine that everyone loved Geoff!
