There are two colleges in New York City that offer GED preparation classes. Both the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) and The City College of New York offer GED classes as part of the City University of New York’s (CUNY) Adult Literacy program. Based on information from the CUNY Adult Literacy website, Hunter College does not currently offer a GED program. The Adult Literacy program offers free GED classes in the mornings, evenings and on the weekends. In addition, Community Impact, a nonprofit organization at Columbia University, also offers GED classes on the Columbia University campus.

For students who are interested in earning college credits while pursuing their GED, the State of New York has a program where students can earn a high school equivalency diploma by completing 24 college credits (the 24 credits must be in specific subjects). This program, called the Ability to Benefit program, has eligibility restrictions and students who are interested must pass a standardized test. Only specific colleges in New York offer this program and the program is not offered at the majority of CUNY colleges. Based on our research, Boricua College (students are considered “Special Admits”), Globe Institute of Technology, and Pace University currently offer this program.
